A cuckoo clock is a standard accessory in many houses nowadays, and has been since it was first crafted. It's because a black forest cuckoo clock is crafted in a most special way. The elegance and appeal of displaying a decorative wall clock in the home has always been popular. This is why having an authentic black forest cuckoo clock can become a family heirloom that is very much treasured and passed on from generation-to-generation.

In the 17th century the black forest of Germany was popular due to the creation of cuckoo clocks by skilled craftsmen. The inhabitants of the high regions of the Schwartzwald, or Black Forest, have long been known for their ability to create lovely wooden decorations. The black forest cuckoo clock was created by citizens with great knowledge in mathematics, people who teamed up with highly skilled craftsmen. At the time, they didn't know that a decorative wall clock or a kitchen wall clock, which is  entirely made of wood would ever become priced possession of future generations.

Someone who was most responsible for making the initial cuckoo clock is Franz Anto Ketterer, and in approximately 1730 he invented it. He produced the sound of cuckoo by utilizing a bellows that produced two diverse sounds, hence the black forest cuckoo clock.

A square wall clock that is painted with water colors is the hallmark of the many antique wall clocks especially the cuckoo clock. But eventually, clockmakers began to create far more elaborate versions of the black forest cuckoo clock. The beak and wings were created to move and some even had real bird's feathers. So it should be a featured element in your living room rather than used as an ordinary kitchen wall clock.

By the early 1800s, some 680 clock makers and around 580 decorative wall clock dealers already started to occupy the Triberg and Neustadt districts. As most farms were covered with snow in winter; clocks were usually made during that time. This time of the year, black forest cuckoo clock makers have ample time to perfect their detailed and hand crafted works of art. When winter was over, clock sellers will then have the opportunity to showcase those fine cuckoo clocks that were painstakingly made to be sold all over Europe.
